Course description
The main aim of this course is to highlight the reciprocal relationship between language and culture, and to raise students’ awareness about the role that culture plays in teaching and learning a foreign language. It introduces the students to the influence of cultural aspects on communication, language use and language learning. The course examines theories about culture and its aspects, its role in learning and teaching foreign languages, issues related to cross cultural communication, and different approaches to intercultural competence.
Pre-requisites
Students are required to acquire knowledge of sub-disciplines of linguistics, and knowledge of teaching English as a foreign language field of inquiry (didactics) that are pertaining to this course.
Course objectives
On the successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Draw a link between the elements of language, culture; language, culture, and identity; language and identity; and language, culture, and thought;
- Synthesise the fundamental approaches, goals and techniques for the introduction of culture in foreign language teaching;
- Identify the role of culture in foreign language teaching and learning;
- Summarise and illustrate theories of politeness, speech acts, and speech events;
- Show understanding of aspects, codes, and issues related to communication (verbal, non-verbal, and cross-cultural), and to culture/intercultural competence;
- Demonstrate understanding of the relationship between language, culture, and learning/teaching a foreign language.
