The course aims at introducing first year students to academic writing. It
covers topics like process writing, plagiarism, referencing styles,
paraphrasing / summarising/ quoting techniques, and oral presentation
skills. At the end of the course students will be able to differentiate between
formal and informal writing and when to use each one of them.
Furthermore, they will start to develop their academic writing skills.
Writing is a process that helps us clarify ideas. Students should learn that
writing is a way of learning, not an end in itself. They shall know that
writing is a complicated, messy, non-linear process filled with false starts.
Therefore, they should learn the key steps they would go through to produce
a good piece of writing.
