The module American Civilization and History aims to introduce first-year EFL students to the major historical foundations of the United States, with particular emphasis on the European discovery of America, the processes of settlement, and their social, cultural, and human consequences, including the emergence of slavery. Through the study of selected historical texts and documents, the module seeks not only to develop students’ understanding of key historical events but also to enhance their English language proficiency. By engaging with authentic academic and historical materials, students are exposed to discipline-specific vocabulary, reading strategies, and critical thinking skills, enabling them to improve their comprehension, analysis, and use of English within a historical and cultural context.
