This course introduces students to linguistics, the scientific study of language, and phonetics, the study of speech sounds. In the linguistics section, students learn about important theories from major thinkers such as Ferdinand de Saussure (who helped found structural linguistics and emphasized language as a system) , Noam Chomsky (known for generative grammar and the idea that humans have innate language capacity) , Edward Sapir (who linked language with culture and thought) , and Leonard Bloomfield (a key figure in American structural linguistics) . In the phonetics part, students explore how speech sounds are produced and described, learn the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) for writing sounds accurately, and practice phonetic transcription, syllable structure, and stress patterns in words.
