This course explores the evolution of African
American literature in the 20th century, from the early slave narratives to the
literary innovations of contemporary authors. It examines key thematic concerns
in African American literature, focusing on identity, race, and resistance. The
course also examines the theoretical foundations of African American literary
traditions, including W. E. B. Du Bois’ concept of “double consciousness”,
Ralph Ellison’s exploration of invisibility, and Alice Walker’s development of
Womanism.
